Baby Massage FAQ

Who massages the baby?
Our instructors demonstrate on a doll and parents are taught how to massage using their own bundles of joy. The exception is our Private Group Single Session. This is purely an instruction class. Parents are shown how to do strokes by the intructor using the demonstration doll.

Where are the classes held at Jumbos?
Upstairs in the comfort and quiet of our party rooms.  They are fully air-conditioned for the Summer and warmed during Winter.

What if the class is held in baby's sleep time or feed time?
There are demonstration dolls available to practice the strokes on. You are free to do what you need to take care of your baby during the class.

Will my baby be massaged with clothes on?
It is up to you. The room will be at a comfortable temperature so your baby can be massaged without clothes or with a nappy and singlet. One of the towels you bring will be used for wiping the excess oil off and other towel can be used to cover the areas of baby that aren't being massaged.

What happens if it is a cold day?
Our split cycle air-conditioners will keep the room at a comfortable temperature.

What is the ideal age of the baby for the massage classes?
From newborn to crawling. But it’s never too late to start!

Does the course fee include play at Jumbos?
Yes this includes unlimited play at Jumbos

What do I bring?
Two small towels and your baby's normal toiletries. Please wear a short sleeved top as the room can get quite warm.

What type of oil is used for the massage?
Jumbos Baby Club Scent-Free Massage Oil is available for use during the sessions. If you would prefer your own bottle you can purchase on-line or at Jumbos' reception. Oils are discussed more during the classes and information is included in the IMIS handbook (which is available for purchase on the day).

When do I have to pay the fee?
Full course fees are due prior to first week. Jumbos accepts cash, EFTPOS and credit card payments.

What is included in the fee?
Tuition and massage oil for the class.

What happens if I cannot make one week?
No course refunds are available. Parents are able to arrange make-up classes if they have given 7 days notice PRIOR to missing/changing class. Refer our Cancellation Policy for more details.

Do you refund or can I substitute a day if my child is too unsettled to continue with the class?
If you have joined that day's session and you and your child cannot continue then there is no refunds or substitute days permitted.

What is Jumbos cancellation policy?

Refer below for this policy.

Why sign up for 4 weeks to do classes and not just read a book?
Being shown the routine by an instructor makes it easier to learn. The classes provide: time to learn, practice and review the strokes; social interaction for the parents and a chance to discuss concerns in a safe environment. The massage is a lifelong skill that can be adapted as your baby grows.

Can dads do the classes?
Of course! The price includes two adults, (mum/dad/grandparent/carer). This is a fantastic opportunity for dads to feel more involved and to enhance the bonding process with their new baby. Attending the classes builds their confidence at handling such a tiny person and to really feel included in the early months when the focus tends to be more on mother and baby.

Can I massage my special needs baby (premature, autism or cerebral palsy, etc.)?
Janice and Lestelle will discuss any special needs on a case by case basis to gain full knowledge of your baby to ensure that the massage classes suit your individual situation.

Do I need to have previous knowledge of anatomy or massage techniques?
No. Everything you need will be covered during the classes and they are easy to learn.

What is the best time of day to massage my baby?
Each baby is unique. During the classes you will learn how to read your baby’s cues and have the confidence to know when is the best time for your baby.

My baby has allergies / eczema - can I still take part in classes?
Our instructors will ask for a brief medical history and discuss on a case-by-case basis to make sure your baby’s needs are looked after.

What if my baby doesn't like the massage?
One of the major focuses of learning infant massage is to ask permission from your baby before you start. You will learn about communicating with your baby in the class and how to acknowledge when your baby is not ready.

Should I join a group class or do one-on-one classes?
This is your preference. You may want the social interaction that a group provides or prefer a more intimate setting with just you and your baby.
